USA 50, CASS CITY 47

Holland’s first career three-pointer beats Cass City at the buzzer of district finale
BY CHRIS OGRYSKI

SEBEWAING- USA’s Tim Holland has never been known as a three-point shooter. That part of his repertoire has stayed well-hidden during his two years playing in the post for the Patriots.
In fact, despite shooting them in practice and every day at lunch, Holland had taken just one three-pointer in his varsity career (he missed) prior to the last play of the USA-Cass City district final last Friday night. With the game tied at 47 apiece with 0.9 seconds left, the Patriots inbounded the ball from the sideline and hit Holland, who caught it, turned around and drilled the 25 footer to give USA their fourth straight district crown.
“It was a hope and a prayer and the prayer was answered,” Patriot coach Mark Gainforth said.
“My mindset was, we’ll isolate Tim down on the block, hopefully they go one-on-one down there so we might get a foul (and get to the line),” he added. “Apparently Tim couldn’t get position, so we threw it out to the perimeter to him and he turned and shot it.”
It was the second time Holland beat the Red Hawks with a last second shot this season. On Feb. 4, he scored the game-winning basket with 4.4 seconds left to beat Cass City 57-56.
“It nice being able to do it twice, but it is even better doing it and winning a district championship,” Holland said of his pair of game-winners. “I’m so glad we’re going to be able to go to Regionals again, but it would be even better if we can go farther.”
But early in the second half, it didn’t look like USA would make it out of districts as the Red Hawks used a 21-11 run to tie the game at 41 early in the fourth.
“(Coming out of the half) we were happy. We were up 10 (30-20) and we were at home, but the wheels fell off,” Gainforth explained. “Offensively, we got stagnant and their kids stepped up and made shots.”
He added, “(Brent) Doerr (nine points, seven in the second half) made some shots that he hadn’t made against us… (Chris) Summersett (16 points) was just a tough guard for us all night. He was the hardest guy to stop.”
While Cass City’s offense was firing on all cylinders, Lance VanHoost was the only player to getting on offense, as he six of his 13 points in the third.
“We just couldn’t really get anyone going and I credit their defense. We stopped moving, we settled for jump shots and didn’t get any second shots,” Gainforth said. “They got three pretty big kids in the middle…and they make you earn their points.”
As things got tight late in the game, Gainforth decided the best course of action for a struggling offense was to run some clock. “That is why we pulled it out with two or three minutes to go. We wanted to spread them out a bit and see if we could get in the lane,” he said.
“Brandon got some good shots in there, but they just didn’t go down,” he added.
One of those near misses came on the second from the last possession for the Patriots, as after running down the clock to about 12 seconds left, Bitzer drive to the basket and pulled up for a jump shot, which didn’t fall. Both teams battled for the ball and with 3.1 seconds left, Cass City got the ball back on a held ball.
But the Red Hawks long pass was picked off at mid-court by Holland, who was fouled, giving USA their final opportunity, which turned into the game-winner. “I was really prepared for overtime and praying that things would start going our way,” Gainforth said. “I couldn’t tell you what would have happened in overtime.”
With the win the Patriots advanced to the regionals on Bad Axe this past Monday, where they faced Flint Beecher. A victory in the regional semis would give USA a shot at the Brown City/Saginaw Nouvel winner tonight.
As for preparing for Beecher over the weekend, Gainforth explained, “I really enjoy Regionals, because you go in there pretty fresh. We know something about them, maybe they know something about us. But there are no triangle-and-twos and no diamond-and-ones, you really just go and play.”
He added, “You have to adjust to the quickness right away and you can’t be timid. You have to play aggressively and do the things that got you to this point.”

Ubly wins Class District

Well since my Anonymous "fan" wants to bust my chops all day, I thought I would appease them with this update. Here are some pictures from the Ubly-USA girls' basketball District finals at Lakers.
Two keys to the game: Alicia Leipprandt took over in the second half and had one of the truly most impressive performances of the season with 26 points. For the Patriots, offensive confidence has been an issue all season. When they made a comeback and took a 27-25 lead over the Bearcats, you could see them playing with some swagger. But once Ubly regained the lead, their condfidence left and nothing they tried offensively seemed to work.
Congratulations to the Bearcats for their first District title since 1974.

Eagles knock off Port Hope

For those who wondered, I'm still around. Just got back from the Caseville-Port Hope game and it definitely lived up to the hype... if you were an Eagles fan. Caseville handled the Bluestars and beat them 35-20 (I think this is right, I didn't write down the final).
At one point the game was tied 12-12, but Port Hope's shooting went cold, Caseville's team played with reckless abandon and the Bluestars were held scoreless for more than entire quarter.
The win for Caseville puts them back in the NCTL North title picture, at least theoretically. The Eagles are two games back with six games to go and have finished their two game series with Port Hope.
Translation: They will need some help to get even a share of the title and will need to take of their business as well.
The fact that Caseville is still in the title hunt this late in the season is a testament to the coaching of Brian Siegfried and the heart of this team, because they have come a REALLY long way from the beginning of the season when they played North Huron in the opener. They have come together as a team and are having a great season, which Siegfried believes will help attract more players to be part of the program.

Tuesday Night in Photos

Better late than never! As I said things would be a little slower over here, so this is about a day later than usual, but I still think you'll enjoys these.
As for the game itself, I thought that Ubly did a nice job of establishing Shannon Weber in the first half, where she had 17, but didn't do so well with that in the second half (she had just five points). Coach Brent Wehner said there were two factors: Sandusky adjusted defensively, but more importantly his team didn't do a good job of running their offense and didn't get her the ball as much as they should have.
Looking at a positive for Ubly, their early season loss to Lakers really refocused them, so this game may have the same effect. I still predict that the Bearcats will win on the road at Sanduky in the season finale to win the league title.
Pretty bold prediction after the team just lost, but I saw enough to know with a few tweaks, this could still be the team to beat in the East.

This picture is from last Thursday, but I got a call from Elayna Wichert's grandma who wanted to see it on the blog. Wichert is the Bad Axe player on the left, EPBP's Stephanie Maxwell is on the right.

Major Announcement...

Just wanted to let everyone I will try to get some pics from friday up some time this weekend. By the way, that wasn't the announcement.
Things may get a little slower around here, as yesterday I was promoted to the position of Interim Editor of all three of our publications. I will be handling all the regular editorial stuff, while maintaining all of my sports duties. I'm going to be spread pretty thin for awhile. Here's hoping we get the approval quickly to hire my replacement in sports.
But one guy who won't be joining my staff is Andrew Seilich, former TCA sports writer, who joined the JRC family recently when he was hired as the spors editor at the (Lapeer) County Press.
Welcome to the company Andrew!
Personally, I'm looking forward to this challenge, one I undertook for four months last year from the summer through part of the fall. I think our news papers will take a better direction and become much more reader friendly and interesting. Only time will tell, but the change should be evident in the next few weeks as I get settled in and the changes get made.

UBLY 45, MARLETTE 35

The Ubly girls sent a message to the rest of the league tonight. The message is... they will be a player in the league title race.
The Lady Bearcats did a nice job on the boards tonight, despite being at a decisive height disadvantage (the Red Raider's had three players who were about the same height as Ubly'stallest player Shannon Weber). The defense stepped up as well, shutting out Marlette for over six minutes in the four quarter to come away with win.
While this is only one game, it does prove that Ubly should be in the conversation with Sandusky and Marlette as legitimate contenders in the GTE. I believe they host the Redskins at home on Tuesday, which will really show where they are at.
All I can say is... beware of the trap game. I know Ubly coach Brent Wehner will have his team ready for Friday's battle with Harbor Beach, but they need to play focused. If they get caught looking ahead... let's just say the Lady Pirates are the type of team that could make them pay.
