It has finally happened

After a year or two of trying to get this gong, it finally seems we have a cast of regulars who want to sit around and talk sports. AWESOME!
So let's come back on Friday, I'll post some pictures and thoughts after tonight's HB vs. Ubly game. Please leave score updates and leave your thoughts and opinions on any games you see, listen to on the radio, etc.
Let's keep this rolling in the right direction.

I'll have an update up soon and some pictures, too. Steve Jias will be sending over an update on NH/OG, too.

Cass City 36, USA 13

Anonymous, thanks for the correction.
Where are the rest of the scores? I'd love to hear some thoughts on the games...

Deckerville - Lakers was a fun game to watch. And half way through the 4th quarter it looked like the Lakers might pull off an upset.

Way to many errors on both sides of the ball to consider either team as a team that would go deep in the playoffs.

I was also at the Harbor Beach game tonight. Boy, Beach looked absolutely awful. It would not surprise me one bit if they ended up finishing last in the GTE. From the looks of their sidelines, they don't have to many extra players. I understand they had some big injuries last week. That's really too bad. You hate to have to see a team that has always been a good competitor play like this.

Bubba,
The Laker score really suprosed me. Our Sports Editor Steve Jias said that EPBP looked good last week, but never led on they were good enough to hang with Lakers like they did.
I'm not willing to write Deckerville off after one bad effort though; we'll see what their made up in week seven against Ubly.
As for the Lakers, hopefully they can build off thois close game and use it to propel them to win next week (I believe they are playing BCAS).

With another injury, HB is down to two on the sideline. Shelke said they would explore all options at this point, bringing some or all of the JV is a possibility.
As for HB, they couldn't get the offense going at all. It was quite awhile before they got their first, first down; it might have been in the second half.
How the mighty have fallen. HB lost so much to graduation, but I didn't expect it would hurt them this bad. Perhaps it is a good chance to call up the young guys and let thme get five games at varsity they otherwise wouldn't have had at this point.

I noticed 3 suited up to play on the sidelines. Didn't realize they had another injury. Bringing up some of the better JV players is probably what they'll need to do. 8 man football is looking pretty good in Harbor Beach and USA.

Some scores of interest...

Dryden 42, Peck 26
paul adams was right, Dryden is for real! and another lost for in the picks!)

Akron Fairgrove 16, CPS 6

BCAS 44, Bad Axe 14

Pike,
Travis Youatt also suffered an injury and was on the sidelines with a big bag of ice on his forearm/wrist. I don't know the extent of his injury, but if some of the other guys don't heal up soon, they are an injury or two away from iron man football or not having enough kids to finish a game.

Chris Ogryski said...

Random thoughts,
I've been a big advocate of dryden this year and it is there NCTL title to lose at this point.
How did Bad Axe score 14 on BCAS?

How do you think Ubly will fare once they leave the GTC? If they were to face Merrill in the playoffs, how do you think they would do?

Anonymous said...

Dryden should make the playoffs without any problem this year. I think they fall in D7. Any chance they could see Ubly?

Chris Ogryski said...

Pike,
I think Ubly's offense is good enough to match up with any team they will face.
They are very deep at back (Mitch & Justin Cleary, Adam Glaza, Jordan Terrasi, Alex Peruski), have an emerging pass game and a lot of size and strength on the line.
Defensively they are very good and getting better. They are a hard hitting team.

Looks like Marlette, at 3-1, have a good chance to be playoff bound as well. A rematch with Reese will be on the horizon.

Chris Ogryski said...

Anonymous,
I think the possibilities would be pretty good when you consider that they usually try and keep teams in districts geographically and there won't likely be any other area teams making the post-season in D7. They'll probably get put in with two out of the area teams. Ubly should be at home for 2-3 playoff games if they keep things up.
Too bad for Dryden they aren't in D8, because they would match up with those teams much better.

I agree with the hard hitting part, Chris. There were some huge hits tonight. With the level of play in the GTC down this year, I don't know if that's what makes Ubly look so good, or if they really are that good. I guess they always seem to make the playoffs and they have gone deep twice in the last 4 years with less talented teams than this.

Anonymous said...

there's no doubt dryden will be in the same district as ubly and if past history is any indication they won't fare very well. right now i say that score would be something like 46-6 maybe worse.

Chris Ogryski said...

Pike,
I think Ubly is that good. Remember they tore up USA in week one and that was before that team got ravaged by the injury bug.
I'm going to watch the game online or channel 97 to look at waht it looks like from another perspective.
As for a potential Marlette/Reese rematch...I wish it was on a Saturday,so I'd have a chance to see it...should be a good one.

I see Mayville beat Brown City. That now gives each of them 1 win in the GTE. Harbor Beach is now officially in the basement with 0 wins in the GTE. Never thought I'd see the day.

Chris Ogryski said...

To all,
The MHSAA taped the game tonight and I believe in certain areas it willbe running on ch. 97 on Monday and online later in the week.
To double check times and stuff, see www.mhsaa.com or the site for their TV stuff.

Something else to consider-Memphis should make the playoffs as well, so they will be thrown in this district as well. Talk about a cake walk for Ubly.

Chris Ogryski said...

Pike,
You have to remember that HB lost six or seven All-Thumb players, I can think pf Queen, Volmering, Buchholz, Gornowich, Callender and Sorenson off the top of my head.
That is a lot of talent to lose, but I'm just suprised there wasn't more to replenish with from the JV program.

Chris Ogryski said...

You mean Memphis that lost 70-0 to USA in the post-season; Ubly beat them handily on the road on year too.
WIth these priliminary ideas of a disrict and barring injuries, things are setting up nicely for Ubly to advance to a Regional and much further.

Harbor Beach is one of those teams that don't rebuild, they just reload. That's why it surprises me so much to see this happening. I guess eventually the talent runs out.

Enrollment numbers

Ubly 275
Memphis 346
Dryden 261

not sure who else would be in that district but it's a cake walk for ubly

Anonymous said...

What is Marlette's enrollment? They used to have around 400 kids, but the last couple of years they've lost a ton. Would be very interesting if they went D7. It seems Reese was right around the D6-D7 cut off line last year. That may also be a possibility.

We probably shouldn't get ahead of ourselves here, since it's only week 4. But with Brown City and Bad Axe still left on Ubly's schedule, there is not doubt they're in.

Chris Ogryski said...

Pike,
The writing on the wall for HB was there in some ways, as the numbers on their sidelines have gotten smaller and smaller; meaning the JV program wasn't producing as many players as in the past.
I blame an emerging soccer program, which could be the reason some of the players didn't come out for football.
I mean USA, which has never shared players between sports, is sharing three players maybe more right now.

Anonymous said...

Reese is at 378 and Marlette is at 397. 378 is right around the cut for D6 and D7. Could we really see a Reese-Ubly district final? If that happens, my guess is it's not even close.

Chris Ogryski said...

Reese scares me; more on principal or history than anything. I know they are decimated with injuries, but I think if those two did meet up in the playoffs, it would be Ubly's toughest test to date.
Still, I would pick Ubly by three TDs.

Anonymous said...

There's no doubt it would be Ubly's toughest test, but is that really saying much at this point?

Chris Ogryski said...

Not really saying much at all, although I don't think the Vassar game will be a cakewalk. I look for it to be (again)a 2-3 TD win, with the team really having to respond to some situations and relly elevating their game.
This team appears to be a special one; let's all make sure we enjoy the ride.

Anonymous said...

A person on the Tribune blog made some good points about Ubly. Maybe we are over hyping them just a little. Pretty good stuff when you read into, the person wasn't ripping the team, just pointing some things out.

Chris Ogryski said...

I disagree with some of his points:
Ubly's line undersized: they have five lineman aside from LaBuhn who are over 200 pounds;
running backs not being special: this is the quickest groups of backs I've seen from Ubly...that I ever remember. There are mulitple backs who can come in during any situation and suceed.
As for allegations of running up the score:
This score was not much worse than what HB did to Ubly last year in the regular season.

And if we are overhyping Ubly here, everyone I've talked to has said the same thing (parents, fans, coaches).

Anonymous said...

I fell that Ubly is just that good. Until proven wrong they are the best team in the Thumb. They have plenty of size on both sides of the ball. On offense they have lots of options to exploit the other teams defense.

I have not seen Cass City. I know that Sandusky played them tough. But, since then they have shown that to be a fluke.

What division are they in.

Dryden-42 Peck-26:

Great win for this bunch of seniors and some good play calling down the stretch. It's nice to see the passing game work so well. It's amazing what you can do when you run the ball so well.

Interesting that Mayville beat Brown City. Also interesting that Brown City beat Harbor Beach last week.
