Listen to the first addition Pigskin Preview

For those of you who don't know, when you listen to the Thumb Tailgaters Show this week, it will be a little different, because none of the original Tailgaters will be there.
But I love what I do and think you readers/bloggers deserve the best coverage of area games possible, including pre-game coverage.
So with that in mind and my shabby little equipment, I have created my own weekly Internet show called Pigskin Preview. To listen to my thoughts on this week's game just click on the links below:
http://www.box.net/shared/pha6qv3ltg
It will take you directly to the site where these audios are and when you click on them, they will download and then automatically start playing.
Now a few things on this:
1) This was the first week I've done this, so there might be a few glitches (at one point, I took a fake commercial break to give myself a breather), but overall you should be able to see what I am working towards.
2) I'm not working with radio quality equipment, but I think it turned out pretty well qaulity wise.
3) And most importantly after talking for so long (I did a combined 1:20+ of audio), my throat started to kill me, so it sounds a little different and in the final segment there are a few extra pauses while I swallowed hard and kept going on.
Please feel free to give me your feedback on this, both good and bad, I've put in about 8 hours, including prep time to produce the show. I want it to get better, so let me know how you think I can achieve that.
And please, if you like it...tell your friends about it. My point in doing this is to get as many people as possible to listen to this.

Chris, I haven't had a chance to listen to your post yet, but I'm sure it's very good.

Just wanted to say it was fun working with you and Eddie. It's just too bad things didn't work out. I can only hope we'll have a chance to work together like that again.

WLEW really had a good thing going, maybe one day they will realize that.

Chris, hope you can hook up with Paul and Eddie again. Better yet expand to get the guys in Caro and even Sandusky to contribute to your show.

I'm haven't heard it yet either, but I will, just as soon as I spread the word around the internet.

Paul and Chiuk,
Thanks for the encouraging words.

Chiuk,
Logistically, it might be hard to get other contributions as the Huron County Press's Ubly studio isn't really equipt for high tech/multiple person taping.
For those who didn't realize I'm joking around, we have no Ubly facility, it is just me using some rudamentary tools like my laptop and digital recorder.
If things take off, I might consider get some kind of better equipment or software that allow me to do some editing.
But that's a long ways away, for now I'm mainly focusing on getting some good content out there and working on a few technical things to make the program sound better.
I think it is pretty good for a first effort, which I finished at 3 a.m. yesterday BTW.

Forgot to say that the Ubly facility is basically the upstairs in my house, where I did the taping when everyone was sleeping.

Chris,
We record our pre-game show at my house on a voice recorder...then Christian downloads it to the website (you'd have to ask him how)....we even have a few people who download it to their i-pods through i-tunes (again...you'd have to ask Christian how to do that).
I'm going to miss listening to you guys on WLEW.....I can pick you up way down to Oxford and since you guys got an hour, your show was the first one I would listen to.

Andrew,
It sounds like we are basically doing the same thing in terms of how we have to record the shows.
Too bad JRC won't spring for some better equipment for us. LOL

Chris, I didn't realize WLEW was cancelling the show, shame on them.
I enjoyed the different comments from everyone.
Working late, so I listened to the first part of "Pigskin Preview". Overall I enjoyed your opinions & facts on the games.(Alot of truth regarding Harbor Beach) For being 1:00 AM thought you sounded pretty awake. I thought your comment regarding the trip to BCAS for BA fans was funny & brave. (I guess that why you get the big bucks) Keep up the good work & thanks for the effort.
PS-Not sure of the grammer, but if I could read or write, I would have gotten a real job!

the problem with wlew is they don't care. they have never cared about high school sports and when they finally got some people in there that did they didn't treat them right. typical they expect the world from their talent but when the talent asks for something in return they are shown the door.

Well Done. Appreciate hearing something about my Dryden Cardinals!

2 Cents Worth,
To clarify, I don't know that WLEW's show has been cancelled per se, but it won't be the same show without the guys who helped build it.
As for this show, next week I'm going to break it down into more segments, easier to listen to part of it if you are in a rush, easier to do little pieces at a time and easier to bring in someone like Sports Editor Steve Jias to give some insight into the game he will be covering.
If that works, who knows the possibilities...
Perhaps portions of some post game interviews from Friday...
I guess you'll all have to come back Friday night and find out if that dream will be become a reality.

Great idea Chris. Breaking it down into smaller seg's would make it more user friendly, too. Sorry to hear about WLEW pre game. This was the 1st year I've been home at the 6:00 hour to listen to it. Guess that didn't last long!

I think the WLEW show will be a train wreck without those guys there. Hopefully Glaza will be involved and at least it will be half way decent, other wise it could be the drizzling shits or as one of my buddies likes to say, "Bowling shoe ugly."

I have also found it helpful for other listeners to upload to iTunes and Zune Marketplace so they can download to their own mp3 player and listen on the go.

989.269.9931 everyone gang up and call the station and complain. that would raise a few eyebrows!
let your voices be heard and call

let Rick stay with play by play, thats what he is good at. one person putting their voice in everything gets to be to much.

it didn't work for Joe Buck, remember?

Well today is the day. Many have expressed their opinions as to what they think the radio show will be like, but today we will find out.
Personally I'm not expecting much, but we could all be suprised. Tune at 6 p.m. and find out.
Wait, is the show still starting at 6 p.m.? Is it still an hour show? I guess their are more things to be answered.
Rick, if you are out there, do you have any answers?

Chris Ogryski said...

Also wanted to add for all of you following this post, sometime this weekend we will have some more audio!!!
I'm looking at some clips from my post game interviews with Sweeney and Schelke.
It might not be tonight, could be as soon as tomorrow. Have to upgrade the RAM on my laptop so that I can get the software we need to run all of our audio through my laptop.
I'm learning a lot on the fly and it might not be perfect, but come playoff time and obviously basketball season, this will be an extremely exciting show to listen to.

A little long winded at times Chris, but I loved every minute!

And coming comments from the coaches...doesn't get any better!

Chris Ogryski said...

Chiuk,
All I can say is it is the maiden voyage. As we upgrade the technology and break the show into a few more segments, it won't be so bad.
In the past, I've always had Eddie to let me know when to shut up, for now, I've got to figure that out myself. But I'm learning...

6:15 starting time is what I last heard......break for the news and back around 6:45 till we finish it up close to seven. I had some input on getting the ball rolling with the new guy plus a segment I recorded.......won't be for me to judge but curious to hear the reactions

Anonymous said...

Well if Rick is involved I'll give it a chance, i might not be as bad as I thought. But it still won't be as good as it was.
Hey Chris, I'll definitely look forward to hearing what the coaches have to say. That would be awesome.
Go PIRATES!!!

great! the news is back in the middle of the pregame show. wlew will never get it. morons

Like the WIDL stuff, I haven't listened to your podcast yet, Chris. I tried to load it, but 23 MB! Holy smokes!

The day is coming, and sometime soon, that someone out there in the Thumb will wise up and create their own web-based broadcasts of games, including commentary.

Will they be live? Maybe not. But a new alternative is coming and when it does, you read it here first.

Chris Ogryski said...

Coming next week a non-live broadcast of the game...JUST KIDDING..we're not there yet.
So Bossick, how would you propose doing it? We are on such a tech kick lately, this may be someone we jump into in the near future.

Anonymous said...

Not a ringing endorsement by Rick. It sounds like it is going to suck...

Anonymous said...

Chris,

I'll be in Bad Axe on Tuesday. I will show a few things and maybe we could make a special Thumb Tailgater podcast edition. Let me know if you would like to do this.

Eddie

Eddy,
Thats sounds cool.
I didn't understand who yiou were going to show stuff to, but if you meant me, I'd love to learn some stuff from you.

Chris, best bet is to buy a Digital Voice Recorder with a USB connection. I use a Olympus WS-100, holds hours of high quality audio.

From there, just find a cheap editing program. I used Goldwave when I needed to make edits (that way, you can take a break and it still sounds seamless).

If you need the cracks, I may have the code if you go and download the program from download.com, or else pony up the 15-20 bucks that it costs to use.

You could go more high-tech, but really, you don't have too. If you want to broadcast games...well, that is a different animal. Call me if you want details and I can get you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks sicotte,
I'm using the DIgital Video Recorder now with a USB and am just trying to figure out the editing stuff. I'll let you know if I need some help.

Also, this is a great Voicer Recorder because it has an index feature. So if you are recording a long interview, you can set 16 points in the one track to be able to jump to later.

I use it a lot now when I am at the Purdue pressers that can go upwards of 45 minutes

Again, not sure how much it costs, but it's a very simple program that does what you need it to.

Yes, I would also suggest to break up your segments to 10-15 minutes...much easier to listen and download.

wlew's pregame show as a freakin train wreck. no break down of the games just scores from last week. news and music inbetween. the guy doing it is ok but it was very disapointing after hearing the way the show used to be.

Chris Ogryski said...

I was in the car from 6:15-6:40 and missed the entire pre-game show, but from what I was told it seemed to be lacking in substance.
From what I heard of the new guy doing the news and giving scores...let's say he need some time to improve.

Anonymous said...

Wlew should be ashamed of its pregame coverage. They had an hour show with no news and break downs of every game for the first 3 weeks. Last week it was a guy just giving out scores from the week before and no analysis. In between he played music and there was also 20 minutes of news. It pains me to say this but 92.1 now has much better coverage in terms of pregame. Wlew is a joke of a station that doesn't care about teh listener. It's all about the money and that sucks. Way to ruin a good thing.

Chris Ogryski said...

WLEW dropped the ball,
I tend to agree with you on this one. I was in the car driving to Harbor Beach from 6:15 to close to 6:45 and never heard anything but music and news.
I wonder how many people tuned in expecting the Thumb Tailgaters Show, not knowing what had happened with Eddie and then got nothing.
Going to be hard to sell advertising for a pre-game show that doesn't exist.
