Lakers show heart, ability in loss to Saginaw Nouvel

A huge third down stand.
Tristan Wruble makes the tackle.
Luke Voelker

Report fron HCP Sports Editor Steve Jias:
While the score isn’t what EPBP wanted to see at the end of the game, the effort on the field was certainly there. The Laker’s season ended as they bowed to Saginaw Nouvel 24-7 in the first round of the playoffs.
EPBP couldn’t take advantage of a couple Nouvel miscues early in the game as they were stopped at the goal line on two separate occasions.
Lakers scored first on a Luke Voelker pass on 3rd and 8 for a 65 yard TD strike and then added the point after. Unfortunately, that would be the only points EPBP would see.
The score was tied at 7-7 at the half.
Lakers came out with an onside kick that was successful, but couldn’t move the ball.
The Panthers were stopped by the Laker D and were forced to kick a field goal….certainly a moral victory to keep the game close. As the third quarter pressed on, it was becoming apparent that the Green Machine was getting tired. Nouvel was starting to move the ball at will – and the Lakers were running out of gas. EPBP had been on the field too long and couldn’t sustain a drive to rest the D or to put points on the board.
Overall, the Lakers had a good showing. They have a lot to be proud of. Coach Gardy made a point of letting his team know that they played the two time state champ – and the Panthers were the best there was – and that the Lakers had them on the ropes…….and they did.
I heard from two people how impressed they were with the Laker team – one was a gentleman who was on the chain gang. He commented that the Lakers were the best disciplined team the Panthers have faced. The other was the sports director at TV5. He couldn’t say enough about how impressed he was with the Lakers. He commented that the Lakers could have folded after the two goal line stands – but they didn’t.
EPBP has nothing to be ashamed of in their loss. They represented their school and the Thumb well. Does anyone hear the hum of the Green Machine returning? I do.

Ubly lays a whooping on Genesee

Ubly's Jordan Kaufman
Jordan Kaufman
The team fires up before the start of the half.
Defensive players Steven Weber, Justin Cleary, Dalton O'Connor and Eric Booms.
JV QB Austin Drake and coach Bill Sweeney
More Kaufman...
Even more Kaufman...
Mitch Cleary
The Bearcats continue to do some amazing things this season. Tonight's 65-6 win over Genesee was full of those types of efforts. Let's review a few:
1. Ubly rushed for 558 yards and passed for 25 for 583 total yards.
2. The Bearcats held a Genesee team that averaged 39 ppg to six points, with that score coming on a fluke play.
3. Jordan Kaufman rushed for 151 yards on 8 carries and had 5 TDs in about 1 1/2 quarters worth of rushed. That is a 19 yards per carry average. To put his effort in perspective, three times in MHSAA history has someone scored 5 TDs in a quarter, Kaufman had 4 in the first. To make the record books for TDs in a game you need 7 (it ranges from low of 7 to high of 11 in records) and Kaufman got 5 in 1 1/2 quarters. Had he continued to rush, he certainly would have made the list.
4. Four other running backs had over 10 yards per carry average:
Mitch Cleary 7 carries for 77 yards (2 TDs) for an average of 11 ypc
Alex Peruski 6 carries for 62 yards for 10 ypc avg.
Jordan Terrasi 4 carries for 73 yards for an 18 ypc avg.
Jimmy Shaw, the JV fukllback this year, 3 carries for 45 yards (2 TDs) for a 15 ypc avg.
5. The team held Wolve's QB Jordan Cook, who averaged over 340 total yards of offense per game during the season, to well under 200.
Just an amazing overall effort by the Bearcats. We'll have some audio up from both Ubly coach Bill Sweeney and QB Jordan Kaufman later tonight.

Other scores we have:
Dryden 50, Memphgis 12
Deckerville 45, MCC Mooney 14
Nouvel 24, Lakers 7 (I think that is the final)

USA & Caseville win big tonight!

Photos by STEVE JIAS
USA celebrates their four game victory over Bad Axe.
USA's Carly Treiber
Bad Axe's Montana Greybiehl
Bad Axe's Lindsey Yaroch
Caseville's Heather Nowak
A big night of volleyball action saw USA knock of Bad Axe 28-26 21-25 25-23 25-22.
I don't know right of hand how this effects the league title pictture. The Hatchets I BELIEVE were undefeated in league play before this loss and I know BA knocked off the Pats earlier in the season. What I can't remember is whether or not USA dropped any league games in between.
Here the stats for the Patriots:
Minda Martinez had 37 assists, seven kills, two solo blocks and scored eight points with three aces; Carly Treiber 20 kills, 26 service receptions and scored eight points; Dani Gremel had 12 kills, two solo blocks and served six points and Jillian Williamson 15 kills, scored 13 points and added seven digs.
In other action, I know Caseville swept their opponents tonight, who I believe was Peck.

We have a tie...and a tie breaker

I was finishing up the Outpick Ogryski standings for the year and it came down to the wire. Chuik Czlek thought he was breathing down Rick Glaza's neck, but in the end it was Twocentsworth who caught him.
2centsworth trailed Glaza by one game in the standings and caught him. Glaza was 10-4 to finish at 82-20 (.804 correctness percentage, which is how this contest is won) and 2centsworth was 11-3 to tie things up at .804.
Since there was still a tie after the first tiebreaker (# of weeks picked), I have created a second tiebreaker to decide who wins the $25 gas card, which has just for the ease of it been converted to a $25 cash prize, so the winner won't be stuck buying their gas at a station that they don't like or is out of their way.
So the tiebreaker will take place next week, giving both contestants a chance to bone up on all the playoff teams, because they'll need that knowledge.
One week, every high school football game gets picked, one winner...
In case these two try to tie this up again, we've got a fun tiebreaker. Total points for all the games that are played next week. Have fun figuring that one out!!!!
So that is my official decree, so there can be no, "Just give him the prize..." We're playing this one out.
As for the rest of the top ten finishers:
3. Chiuk Czlek 80-22 .784
T3. Andrew Selich 80-22
5. Coaches Take 78-24 .765
T5. Garrett Jurges 78-24
T5. Eddie Fury 78-24
8. Me 77-25 .755
T8. Jill (not my wife) 77-25
10. Mumbles 58-19 .753

Let's get this party started

I see there are lots of people on the blog "window shopping" (even as I type this), but no comments!!!!
So let's throw our predictions out there for Ubly, Lakers and Deckerville, too. Are these teams winning this week, are they losing, what do you expect to see, what are the keys to a win, etc.
And Ubly Alumni I know you are out there, so let's chime in. What do you think of what your school has done so far this year and what they have the potential to do throughout the post-season.
Let your voices be heard!!!

Part two of Pigskin Preview is up!!!

A look at Ubly & Laker's opponents

In lieu of an audio update, partly due to time constraints and also because I want to give people time to enjoy the CC updates, I've opted to post this info which will appear in this week's paper instead.
Look for Pigskin Preview, as well a preview interview with Ubly coach Bill Sweeney on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
Please don't forget to scroll down through the other posts, as we've had about five updates so far today.

Playoff opponents
Two are teams have advanced to this year’s post-season. Fans are certainly familiar with the local squads, but here are some things you might know about their opposition:
Genesee (6-3) @ Ubly (9-0)
· The Wolves head into the post-season for the first time since 2006, a year in which they lost to Ubly 43-0 in their district opener.
· Genesee, who competes in the Genesee Area Conference, finished in a three way tie for second place in their league with a 4-2 league record.
· Averaged 39 ppg and allowed 30 ppg defensively.
· Genesee is 1-3 this season against teams that made the playoffs, with their lone win coming against GAC league champion Burton Bentley 77-40. In that game, QB Garret Cook was 13-for-22 for 276 yards with six TDs and three interceptions. He also rushed for 160 yards and two scores in that game, while returning a kick for a score and recording an interception on defense.
· For the season, Cook has 965 yards rushing with 13 TDs and 2,055 yards passing for 26 TDs with 16 interceptions. Receiver Ryan Buchler has 816 yards and 13 scores, while Tyler Peltonen has 929 yards and 10 TDs. Their next best rusher is Dumarias Butler with 340 yards and three scores.
· The Wolves have faced GTC teams five times in the last 40 years with them winning three times (three wins all against Mayville).

EPBP (6-3) @ Saginaw Nouvel (9-0)
· Nouvel won the state title last year in Division 6 and are currently on a 14 game win streak.
· The team is scoring 39 ppg on offense and allowing just 11 ppg on defense.
· Nouvel is 4-1 against GTC teams all-time with their lone loss coming to Reese, 26-19 in 2005. They do own a 13-7 win over EPBP in their only meeting in 1991.
· By making the post-season, Nouvel extended its playoff streak to 10 straight years.
· QB Ryan Henris had his best effort of season in win over John Glenn recently, where he was 12-of-15 passing for 244 yards and three scores. In that contest, Chris Jacobs and Sam Hebert, his main targets on offense, had 108 and 102 receiving yards respectively.
· The team’s top rusher is Ryan Miller, who rushed for 165 yards and two TDs in a win over St. Joan of Arc (from Canada) in Week 9.

Area teams dominate at CC Regionals

Who would have known?
Heading into this past weekend's cross-country regionals, I thought the Harbor Beach girls had a great shot at finishing first and I figured some other individuals would make it, but four total teams? I'm very pleasantly suprised!
Aside from the HB girls, the USA girls finished second and qualified as a team. On the boys' side, the Ubly boys finished first and the USA boys second, qualifying both to compete in next weekend's State Finals. The Bearcats are possibly the biggest suprise, as they were kind of a suprise team when they won the GTE league crown a few weeks back.
We'll have audio, that's right...cross country audio, from HB coach Linda Wright, Ubly coach Tammy Laurie and USA coach Robin Wasik later tonight.
Hopefully all you CC parents and bloggers will support your teams and download the audio. If we see the interest, we'll definitely post more audio following next week's finals.
For now, here are some of the results...

Beach shutout in Regional finals

Harbor Beach fell behind 1-0 about three minutes into the game against AHOC and 4-0 at the half in a 5-0 loss in the Regional finale.
The loss takes nothing away from an amazing season from the Pirates, who were undefeated in league play, won a district crown and went further in the post-season then any other soccer team in history.
This team has no seniors, so they won't be losing any of the pieces to the puzzle. In fact coach Bowen explained that after the game, his players were already talking baout things they are going to work on to get better for next year.

Coach Gardy comments on Lakers making the playoffs

Sports Editor Steve Jias talked to George Gardy after last night's game and there are some REALLY good comments. Gardy tells it like it is and pulls no punches about why he feels his team didn't play as well this week.

Lakers post-season, audio & more

* In looking at the Lakers, they seem to be a solid division six team at this point. At one point tonight, I thought they were going D7, because in confirming Ubly's spot in D7, I divided up to find the next division line and Lkaers had fallen to 7. However, there are only 233 teams that have automatically qualifed, meaning up to 23 teams will get in with 5-4 records. Those teams are divided out as equally as possibly by class (A, B, C & D) so that would put roughly an additional six teams in D 7 and/D8. Lakers are the second or third biggest school in D7, so if more than two of the additonal qualifiers have a smaller enrollment then EPBP, they will get bumped up to D6. We'll have the answer to that question in another day or so.
* Speaking of Selection Sunday, we'll have some audio up that day following the announcements along with analysis of the pairings.
* Speaking of audio, we'll have some up from the Laker game later this morning and with the start of the playoffs, we'll be talking to Ubly coach Bill Sweeney each Tuesday and psoting that audio, which will give insite into their upcoming game.
* As for some quick predictions, again D8: Peck @ Deckerville, BCAS @ Dryden...
D8: Genessee @ Ubly and Memphis vs. Burton Bentley.

Ubly wins big and other scores

Ubly picked up a big 53-14 winner over Bad Axe tonight, rushing for 450 yards as a team. Jordan Kaufman rushed for 137 yards on five carries and had three scores including a 50 yard scamper on a broken play. It started as a pass play, but when Bad Axe pressured Kaufman, he rolled out and ended up rushing up the Hatchet sideline for the score.
But the really story was that tonight the team was able to let loose and have fun. Eric LaBuhn, the 6'7" 315 pound lineman played running back in the first series or two. Coach Sweeney had promised him in the summer if they were 8-0 heading into the Bad Axe game he could run and he ended up scoring on a one yard run.
Richard Shatto, who has been the team's extra point kicker when the team is way ahead, conencted with one tonight for what I believe is his first extra point of the year. It had good distance and floated over the goal posts...the team went wild.
Kaufman played coach when the second and third team was in, mentoring backup Adam Glaza and calling the plays as well.
And when Sweeney called for the last team offense, he joked with Paul and I, telling us, "Get in their guys."
Overall a fun, but rainy night. But it will be back to business for the Bearcats come Monday as they start preparing for their open rounding opponent.
Pictures of this game will be up soon.
In other scores:
Lakers 34, Sanduksy 16...Jias's uopdate will be up soon...
Deckerville 50, CPS 14
Au Gres Sims 49, North Huron 7
BCAS by 8 over Carrolton...COugars in the playoffs, they are a team I didn't figure as a win, but thiought they would get in by playoff points.

Harbor Beach knocks off Ligett

The Pirates picked up the hard fought, 2-1 win in 2 OTs today. They trailed 1-0 ealry but rebounded to tie it in the second half. After a scoreless overtime, Dustin Mazure (a first year player) scored the game winner, knocking in a rebound shot (or at least that is what it looked like, with all the bodies around the goal).
After winning districts, coach Phil Bowen said he had yet to see his team play a full game as they were capable of, but after this effort it is no doubt they are playing up to their potential. Not bad for a team without any seniors.
Of note, the game was VERY physical and several yellow cards were issued. One Ligett player actually argued with HB fans, telling them to shut up, because they were winning. They say good sports are winners and in this case, that statement seems to be VERY true.

Hatchets fall to Caro

Bad Axe's season ended with a 3-0 loss to Caro in the D3 District Finals at EPBP. We'll have audio up from coach Dave DeCourval later this weekend.

Harbor Beach wins district title

The Pirates picked up a 4-0 win over Brown City to win the district championship. Harbor Beach came out flat and had communication issues in the first half, but worked through them...showing glimpses of what they are capable of as they added two scores in the second half.
This is still a relatively young team as they have no seniors, so this may only be the tip of the iceberg for this team, who plays in Regional action on Wednesday at Auburn Hills Christian.
We'll have audio up from coach Phil Bowen later this weekend.
