Let's Talk Football

Good Friday everyone!
Last Friday was a blast because so many of you posted your comments, scores and thoughts from the games around the area. Let's keep that enthusiasm up.
Steve Jias will be sending in a report tonight from BCAS-EPBP and I'll have some observations from the Ubly/Vassar game (actually going to the game as a fan for a change...haven't done that in seven years).
Also we'll post scores as they come in throughout the night and if it works will have some audio from the Laker games, our first forray into producing sound clips from live interviews.
I'll also put together an audio segment tonight or tomorrow morning wrapping up tonight's football, along with some highlights from soccer and volleyball this week.
This will jump start our effort next week, where we will have daily or every other daily audio updates, as whether daily pictures from the games we attend.
Also, at least one of the readers out there said there should be a section for some you bloggers to write about things.
Feel free to send me submissions by e-mail @ ogryski@avci.net and as there isn't anything insane or unprintable in it, I'll post them on the blog.
Remember this your blog and we are writing the rules as we go along, so we can go in whatever direction you want to make this the most fun and interactive blog possible.

Cass City 27 , Reese 19

Cass City is 5-0, 5 straight wins since 2005 & 1988. They are alone in 1st place in the GTW for the time being.

Ubly 56, Vassaar 28

Vassar was within 13 points early in the fourth before the Bearecats pulled away.
Some observation from the stands:
* Ubly fumbled on their first possession and again on their second or third drive.
* The Bearcats had three or four takeways. Vassar couldn't run the ball and seemed to throw almost every down. They also had a mobile QB who would scramble and run, much like Kaufman.
* Ubly has some work to do on their pass defense...they had a few weaknesses exposed, but know now what they need to work on for the playoffs.
* I'm casting my vote now for All-Thumb Player of the Year in football and it is going to Kaufman. He had a couple of scores, several big third down runs including a 90 yd TD run on a 3rd and 12.
* This is the best offense I've seen...I know I've said it before, but they are just so explosive. They are veryu hard to stop and their second string backs are as good as the first.
* Just want to say what great sports Vassar are. When the game was over, the players walked in front of their fan's in the stands and sang the fight song with the cheerleaders...very cool.
* What an emotional night in Ubly, but now for the reason you think. David Osentoski was honored, he has played in the football program for six years and is a senior, but is suffering from cancer. He will be enterring hospice soon as there isn't anyhting that can be done.
David was able to sit in a golf cart on the sidelines with his parents and coach Sweneey made a point to go over and talk with them several times during the game, all the queen candidates took their picture with him and David was honored before the game...with the announcer tellimg him his teammates said "he was the best teammate they have ever had" and that they loved him...it was very moving.

We will have exclusive covergae tonight of Bad Axe's win. I called a 1/2 time audible and had Sports Editor Steve Jias leave Lakers for BA to cover this shocking win. Apparently the team dosed coach Rowland with GAtorade to celebrate the win...Congrats to Bad Axe, this is a huge step in the right direction.

Raydar Williams rushed for 429 yards and 6 TDs against North Huron tonight...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-It was a toss up for my pick on the Bad Axe & USA game. I picked USA earlier this week, then later learned of the injuries, and lack of depth USA was once again contending with much like Harbor Beach is dealing with also. So am I shocked? No. We knew that Bad Axe could score and that sooner or later the team would rally around Coach Rowland's philosophy. Bad Axe also has a JV team I do believe this year. That adds more spark to the fire for now & next year.
-As for Kingston's Raydar Williams 6 td's and 429 yards...Yeah that is WOW! Awesome...But Kingston still lost the game to North Huron.

I know it's not in the Huron County Press coverage area but in Sanilac County I like to look at the BWAC (bluewater St.Clair Couty area)Right now it's a 4 way tie in the BWAC between Almont, Cros-Lex, Capac and Richmond. Now that's some fun football down there! Almont's 40-26 win over Cros-Lex was impressive.

I'm not suprised Eddie in terms that Bad Axe had Dillon Newell run for 194 yards and so I knew they had some offensive potential, but...I haven't seen much from that.
That said, I almost picked the Hatchets, too. My wife kept saying they would win...I guess I'll let her do my picks next week.

With the 429 yards rushing for Raydar Williams, he will be tied for 10th best rushing game ever in the State of Michigan.

Chiuk's 'Believe It Or Not'

We could we see perennial GTC powers USA and Harbor Beach facing each other in Week 9 sporting identical 1-7 records.

A little comfort for both. Defending Tri-Valley Central champ Alma is 0-5!

My apologies, EPBP. I stated that the Laker's layed an egg against Carrollton in the first week. Carrollton is real! They knocked off Merrill 27-21 last night to move to 5-0. It was Merrill's first loss.

Chuiuk,
Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing until I came across Carrolton ranked in the state polls last week, while prepping for last week's audio show.
And speaking of the Lakers, they could finish with their second straight 3-3 finish in the GTW, which will be a monumental feat for a team that hasn't won much of anything since that run to the semis in 2002.
Bad Axe won't be as an easy of win as thought, but if Lakers beats the Hatchets and follows that up with an upset of Reeese (no one is beating Cass City in league play this year)they would have their first winning league record since 2002.

Chris: Cass City probably will be unbeaten in league play BUT don't think it will be a cake walk. With three pesty teams left, Vassar, BCAS and Lakers don't think any one of those teams can't hand them a loss. Its always tuff to go to BCAS and get a win. Vassar just put up 28 point on a VERY good Ubly team. And Lakers, well they have some talent but will they use it? Thats why Thumb football is so exciting. All it takes is 1 play, 1 call, 1 fumble and the game can change on a drop of a dime.

how about the ubly line??? without them, running game couldn't happen.

Anonymous,
I know I said Cass City will go undefeated the rest of the way in the league, I don't think I ever used the word cake walk.
But I stand by what I said. Lakers, while picking up a second straight huge win, still haven't proven they can win with any consistency yet, maybe that will happen in the weeks to come.
BCAS, well they not only lost to Lakers, but USA as well...enough said there.
As for Vassar, they impress me as a team and could give Cass City a little bit of a challenge. Zach Germain is a heckuva Qb as he threw for 219 yards and ran for 122 moire against Ubly with 3 TDs.
The Vulcans seemed to almost throw exlcusively or run with the Qb as there run game was shutdown by Ubly.
I don't think the Bearcats, who did have 3 or 4 picks, will see another team until the Regional round of the post-season or later.

Fan of sports,
The line has come up big, but never bigger that on Friday where Ubly rushed for 509 yards, with Kaufman rushing for over 200 of those.
I think when it comes time for All-Thumb voting, they will be mcuh represented, like Harbor Beach was last year (takign TOY, COY as well as having around nine guys on the team).
But for that to happen, they have to manage to stay injury free and take care of business along the way, which I don't see as a problem.

Chris-you got to keep in mind that USA has been absolutely destroyed by injuries to key players this year. With a lack of depth, there is no way to compensate for that. The USA team that Ubly and BCAS faced was much different than the team Bad Axe played. Had USA stayed healthy, they would be right in there with the rest of the pack for the West title and a possible playoff spot. You've go to take this into consideration when you make comments.

Jud,
A healthy USA team would still only be the third or fourth best team in the GTW this season, behind CC, Reese and possibly Vassar.
And I have gone out of my way to mention how USA has been ravaged by injuries. That being said, the Pats are in the position they are in and will have a difficult time beating nayone the rest of the way, if they don't get healthy. There best shot will be against HB, who are having their own injury issues this year.
