BROOKLYN – Earning All-State honors is impressive, but accomplishing it four straight times is rare. That goal was realized by USA senior Sara Turschak who, along with Harbor Beach junior Ali Wessels and Ubly senior Jennifer Messing, medaled at the State Cross-Country Finals at the Michigan International Speedway this past Saturday.
Wessels finished fourth in the state in Division Four with a time of 18:59.6, which broke the school record. “I’m really excited about it. I’ve been working for it all year,” she said. Turschak finished eighth with a time of 19:12.6, while Messing finished 14th with a time of 19:37.7.
These three ladies have pushed each other all year and now are finally able to enjoy the fruits of their labor. “I know that we’ve all been working for this all year. We’ve all put in a lot of miles,” said Messing, who earned All-State honors for the second time in three years.
Wessels added, “I’m really going to miss them next year.”
The weather was a little warmer that last week’s regional and was more conducive for a good race. “I think today was the perfect day for running,” said Turschak, who pointed out last week wasn’t her best race.”
Messing finishes her career on a high note after taking All-State honors. “It was my goal all year. I did a lot of miles over the summer. It’s just what I’ve been working for,” she said.
Her teammates, coach and friends cheered her on. “I used that to help me out,” she explained. “It was my last chance to leave on a good note.”
As for Turschak, her effort earned an eighth place finish and her fourth All-State honors. “It’s awesome that I could do that,” said Turschak.
“It’s a good experience and I’m glad that I got my personal best,” she added.
With Turschak and Messing graduating, Wessels will have one year to see how much further she can move up in the state rankings. “I’m really glad that all of us could run together,” said Turschak.
The girls celebrate their accomplishments at each meet. Their teams and coaches encourage one another to push themselves. “We have some of the best sportsmanship in the thumb,” said Messing. “I’m sad to see us separated.”
