Check out our playoof preview

As an award winning journalist, I have to say that one of the things I am most proud of in my entire career is the playoff preview we put out this week. The seven page, full color preview, which included our Division 6 & Division 7 guides gives information on all 64 teams that make up those two divisions.
Certainly over the next five weeks, it should be a valuable tool to refer to for both the hardcore and average fans as they try to see who is next on the horizon for our Thumb area teams.
Please feel free to leave your feedback on the material.

Chris it's ok, the one thing I wondered about though: the headline says seven GTC teams get in the playoffs but you only have 6 helmets under the headline?? where is thr Reese helmet??

Unfortunately newspapers are only six columns, so design-wise there wasn't a way to incoraprate the extra helmet. However, we did bold all the names in that part to identify area teams.
May I ask since you think it is "OK" what you would have done different?

I'll be honest. if "OK" is the overall reaction I get on this project...I'll definitely have to consider that this wasn't worth the time.
The project was meant to be a service to all area football fans so they can reference it throughout the playoffs...and remain a useful tool hopefully for five weeks.

That's all fine and dandy Chris, but how about the only local soccer team still playing. Harbor Beach hosted 3 district games IN Harbor Beach last week and the only coverage they got was a team pic, one other pic and and article on the last page of the sports section. Please don't tell me that it's because you only publish weekly and there wasn't room - that's been 'done to death'. What a disservice to the soccer players.

You have never heard that excuse from me aboutr only publising once a week!
In an ideal world, this special football preview would have been its own section, but in tough times, the ads weren't there to support that.
We knew soccer would take a backseat this week, which is why we were out at the league title game in Marlette and played that win up HUGE!
We covered that team throughout the playoffs wherever they went & we began our sports season with full coverage of their tie with Ligett and will end it with full coverage of yesterday's loss.
So don't act like we have ignored your school!
If & when there is the desire from our readers for a playoff soccer preview, we'll explore that with our staff.

Chris I see it as a great reference guide......I like numbers and facts and it's loaded with them.
How much time did it take to get all that together??

Chris Ogryski said...

I don't have an exact figure Rick, but between all the normal stuff I did for the paper and this I worked 98 hours. I probably spent on average 1/2 hour on each team, sometimes a little more. Some of the data I has was easy to find, but looking across the web to find game stats and player names was pretty time consuming.
I'm glad you like it.

Wonderful job on the play off section of the paper. We will keep in handy over the next few weeks. Thanks for the extra effort, great job.
