The Lady Warriors were out to avenge their loss against the Bay City All Saints from a year ago in the district finals and looked to move on to the League level. The Cougars came into the game 2-18 for the season - not very impressive, but were peaking at the right time. North Huron took the lead and momentum into the third quarter, but the All Saints pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the district title by a score of 46-53.
Even though the Warriors went into the locker room with the lead at half, things didn't go as well as Coach Mark Krug would have liked. The Warriors found themselves down early for most of the first quarter and were in danger of letting the game slip away early. North Huron responded and was able to pull within two late in the quarter and were only down four at the end of the first frame.
The Warriors kept pace with All Saints for the second quarter - but couldn't get any closer than for until Caitlin Homrich hit for two to cut the lead to only a bucket. Megan Heffner tied the game with a minute to go when she hit a pair from the charity stripe. Jodie Pettit scored jsut before half to take the lead into the locker room up by two 26-24.
The Warriors couldn't carry the momentum into the third quarter as they only scored four points with their first two coming at the 4:35 mark and their other points coming with only a minute to go in the quarter.
While the Warriors went cold, the Cougars were abl to put 12 p on the board to take a six point lead into the final quarter.
It was time for the Warriors to make a run - or see their season end. The responded again by going on an 9-2 run to pull within one and then take the lead on a Sara Clancy shot at the 5:01 mark.
The next three minutes would be the beginning of the end for the Warriors as they went scoreless while the Cougars put 9 on the board to go up 47-39.
Nicole Church tossed in a three to cut into the lead, but the Cougars answered with four points from the charity stripe to complete their scoring. Sara Clancy rounded out the scoring with a triple - but it wasn't enough as the Lady Warriors fell for the second straight year to All Saints.
This was the final game for Jodie Pettit, Abby Knoblock, Nicole Church, Cory Kirkpatrick, and Alicia Schramski. According to Krug, they all played an important role in the team's success this yar.
Coach Krug will have a talented core group returning to the floor next year - with another year of expereince that may be able to take the team to the next level.
The lady Warriors should be complimented on their sportsmanship. Not only did they go throught the traditional line to congratulate the team after the game - they went out to center court to congratulate the team after the trophy was awarded. North Huron should be proud of the team's accomplishments on the hardwood - but also the sportsmanship and class they displayed after the game. Great Job Warriors!!
