BREAKING NEWS: Warriors = 20-0

North Huron needed a win over Owen-Gage to accomplish a feat so rare at the school, that no seems to remember the last time that it happened, just that is was a LONG time ago...the elusive 20-0 season.
The Warriors got the big win 72-65, but it was anything but easy. According to North Huron player Eric Iden, the team trailed by 11 at the half.
Congratulations to North Huron on an amazing season and good luck on keeping it going in districts.
Hopefully the rest of my fellow Thumb Sports Writers Association members will share my sentiment and honor this team with their votes for All-Thumb Boys Basketball Team of the Year.

When do you vote on this? Before or after the districs? I Watched Brown City Play and they looked like a much better team than N.H. which I also watched play. Going 20 and 0 in your league is great but there has to be more to it than that.

We vote after districts, but only consider the regular season for the awards.
In my eyes, Brown City had the awrd in hand, they just needed to beat Harbor Beach in the season finale and likely would have had the votes to get it.
But they didn't.
As for going undefeated, the precedent has been set in the past that unbeaten teams win the Team of the Year.
And before you throw out the NCTl argument, the first year of voting, we had USA and Kingston go undefeated and we only named USA team of the year.
The next year, same two undefeated teams and we awarded both teams, same with Kingston and Cros-Lex a few years ago.
Bottom line, as a group we decided, that you can't penalize a team for the league they okay in. Now if both teams had losses that would be one thing, but when you beat every team in front of you...what more can you ask for.
That's how I'm voting, becasue that is the precedent. It is by no means a done deal though; it will be interesting to see how everyone else feels about following the precedent.

I agree with Chris, had Brown City finished with the win over Harbor Beach, I was voting for the Green Devils.

You can't deny a 20-0 season. North Huron did what was asked of them, they beat every team in front of them.

So you say you should not be penalized for the league your in. Well then I say the top teams in the GTC IE: Brown City gets penalized by getting beat one time by a strong oppenent in Harbor Beach. The strength of ones league sould be taken into consideration in my opinion. And this in no way, should take away from N.H. and their fine season. The dogfights that USA and Brown City had to go through to win their leagues must be looked at for any real evaluation of who is the best team in the area. Or otherwise you are just naming the story of the year and then I would agree that would be North Huron.

I understand that you are voting on regular season only, and if your rules say you HAVE to make NH the team of the year, then so be it. It would be a shame, though, if a team like USA or Brown City goes all the way and becomes State Champs and they aren't even given consideration in this. That's why, and don't go all psyco on me for saying this, I don't pay much attention to these "all thumb" awards. There's too much politics involved in them. Tuscola CO wants their kids recognized, Sanilac wants theirs recognized and of course Huron Co wants their kids to be number one. You only have to look back to last years football picks to see that.

Fred,
It doesn't bother me if you don't follow the awards; your choice.
I do take exception to your comment on the football awards. Is there a better team, player or coach out there then from the Ubly team?
Oh wait...are you talking about the fact that Furno was a co-coach of the year and that Sweeney wasn't the winner by himself?
Well all I can say is that it is a democratic process with each of the six papers getting one vote apiece and we let the totals decide...of note there are two papers, essentially representing each county.

Just for clarification, I was speaking of the 2007 football awards where a lot of very good athletes were omitted from your selections. I can't really comment on this years award winners, because like I said, I no longer pay any attention to them. But you can see where I'm coming from. Selecting a team that doesn't even win their district (we all know BCAS will take that honor) versus teams who have a real shot at going a long way says a lot about your awards.

Fred,
All I can say is that this is a work in progress. In the 2007 selection, we had a couple of issues that we learned from. Some coaches had a few concerns about kids that didn't make the team that year and we have worked directly with those coaches to improve the process. So each year we continue to improve and I think this year's team is our best ever. I think you should head over to the Thumb Sports Writers blog and check it out to see for yourself.

Thanks Chris. I checked out the blog and appreciate your efforts. Let me just say that my comment on the political voting was for the other 2 counties, especially Tuscola. I believe that you and Paul do your best to vote for the most deserving. I just don't think this can be said for the others.

I appreciate the compliments.

Why dont' you have a class D team of the year, And a Class C/B team of the year? Its Hard to compare apples to oranges.

Chris Ogryski said...

Unfortunately the costs are prohibitive for doing that as a set of trophies for a sport is $400 (team of the year and player of the year for that sport).
If someone wants to donate $800 so we can have the Class C & D trophies in both boys and girls basketball, we'll gladly accept it.
